Who Would Steal from a Child? - I Feel the Love Project March 2014

When a jar filled with cash was stolen from a restaurant in a small Central California town, the restaurant owners and customers were shocked and dismayed. This was not an ordinary jar sitting on the counter for the purpose of leaving a tip – this was a special jar, filled with heartfelt notes and monetary donations for a very special little girl, 6-year-old Madelyn “Maddy” Gonzales, our I Feel the Love Project March 2014 card recipient.

Diagnosed in the fall of 2013 with acute lymphocytic leukemia, Maddy often travels with her family – mom, dad, and older sister – for treatments. The stolen jar of cash, filled with donations from community members, would have helped to offset some of the expenses incurred by the family.
“I was sad when I found out,” Jessica Gonzales said. “Just to know that there’s people out there that would do something like that. I’m not naïve, and I know things like this happen, but when it directly affects my daughter, well, it’s just sad.” And what was Maddy’s reaction when she heard the news a few days later?

“She said ‘That’s just stupid!’ when I told her what had happened,” Gonzales said. “Then she said she was sorry for using a bad word; she doesn’t like saying ‘stupid.’ She’s a sweet little girl and for this theft to happen was just not right.”

I Feel the Love Project- March 2014

After reading Maddy's story, we knew that she was our girl for our March project.  The exciting news for me is that for the first time since project #1 (June 2011), this is a local project for me and I get to hand deliver the box of goodies to Maddy.  That will be an extra special day!

Please join us this month as we create handcrafted greetings cards to send to Maddy. If you would like to be a part of this month's project:

  3. This precious child has been on my heart nonstop... the story is heartbreaking (in multiple facets) and I am eager for her to receive our gifts, hand-delivered by you! The Lord will always repay double for our trouble and that begins by this outpouring of love. Brighter days await Sweet Maddy!

  5. This story just makes me want to cry! I don't understand the way some people behave, but thankfully, it's not my job to understand. Thank you for bringing this sweet girl's story to the crafting community Madison. I hope all the cards you collect will help to lift her spirits ♥

  6. Madison, it is just plain wrong for some one to steal, and especially from a child battling cancer! Shame on the thieves! I pray that they get to know and accept Our Lord who washes away all our wrongdoings. I'll be making cards also for Maddy.
