I Feel the Love Project- Brandon

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #11

Today we complete our journey back to the beginning by looking at our final recipient for the first year, the month of May 2012.

BRANDON was just 4 one day, riding in the family car for a trip to McDonalds for a Happy Meal, when he was seriously injured in a car accident. Despite being in a car seat, Brandon had suffered a traumatic brain injury, traumatic spinal cord injury and had been without oxygen to his brain for too long for a reasonable chance at recovery. Despite dire predictions early on, Brandon has had remarkable accomplishments in rehab. He is considered tetraplegic, which means he can move one limb from time to time; he remains trach and ventilator dependent, which little likelihood that he will ever be weaned from the ventilator, due to his neurological damage from the accident.

I recently received an update from Ms. Ellen, the administrator at Pediatric Specialty Care where Brandon receives treatment.  This is what Ms. Ellen had to say, "Brandon has had a few scary episodes where his breathing slows, but he fights to come back. Meanwhile, his Mom Linda has found a new home that is going to be modified to accommodate Brandon, and soon, the family will again be reunited after this Year Full Of Challenges. Linda asked for notes/cards to decorate Brandon's new room -- and these cards will be PERFECT and WELL-LOVED!! THANK YOU ever so much, Madison, and all of the wonderful crafters who participate in IFTL projects monthly!! ~ Love, Ellen (CardMonkey)."

Brandon, we were so happy and honored to make cards for you.  I know you also received an adorable banner from one of our crafty supporters.  I know you will love it!!  We are so happy to hear that you will be back home soon in a home with your mom.  We are all praying for you Brandon:)  You are a fighter and one special young man.

I hope you have enjoyed looking back at our first year as much as I have.  If you have someone that you would like us to send cards to, please send us an email at funkycards @ charter dot net (no spaces).  Join us on July 1 as we introduce you to our 2nd year of the IFTL Project.

Have a wonderful day.

I Feel the Love Project- Emily

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #10

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the month of April 2012.

It all started when Emily began complaining about her legs and joints hurting, among other trips to the pediatrician. This is when her parents decided to take her to the children's hospital, where they found out the bad news, Emily had Leukemia.

On April 25th, Emily wrote the following message on her Caring Bridge page, "Well, I'm a week into my new chemo phase and although my energy level is not quite what it was, I'm doing well and moving forward as planned. Dr. says my counts will start to drop this week but I'm determined to not let it affect me too much. My family is with me (which is So important) and I have good prayers and great support along side me. Thank you to everyone for the positive words and the love and support!!! Hugs and smiles.....Emily."

Emily's aunt said that Emily's mom is soooooooo thankful to each and every person that has sent something to little Emily!  She wishes that she could send a thank you card back but that would take FOREVER!  She is soo truly thankful that there is so much love to go around and she has promised to send some pictures to show everyone what Emily has been getting and how happy it makes her everyday to get new cards!  It puts a smile on her face every single day that she checks the mail!!! And THAT is priceless!!!!

This is the reason that the I Feel the Love Project exists and will continue!  Any time we can brighten the day of someone going through something as serious as a cancerous brain tumor, I say it is the least we can do.  Thank you again to all my wonderful followers who continue to support this project.

Join me tomorrow as we look back at the recipient of the I Feel the Love Project cards for the month of May 2012, Brandon.

Have a wonderful day.

I Feel the Love Project- Trinitie

I FEEL THE LOVE

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #9

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the month of March 2012.

In December of 2011, Trinitie was experiencing minor  headaches and when they began to get worse her mother took her to the doctor.  Trinitie just wasn't herself. After explaining all her symptoms to the doctor, he quickly ordered them to go the the nearby hospital and have a CT Scan performed. After that procedure had taken place Trinitie had to have a MRI performed as they had noticed a mass on her brain and needed to get a closer, more precise look. When they were finished they handed the family a disk and they were told to go back to the clinic and show the pediatrician the disk.

Trinitie's mom says, "I remember this like it was yesterday, almost like something out of a Twilight movie. We pulled into the parking lot of a well known always crowded pediatric clinic to find no one in the parking lot and as we walked up to the front door a nurse greeted us as if they had been waiting for our arrival. At that moment I knew in my heart something was going on. We sat in the room and waited for the Dr, when he walked into the room almost instantly I saw his face change. He said "there is no easy way to tell you this but, Trinitie has a Brain Tumor" Trinitie started crying and everything the Dr. said at that point was far off in the distance somewhere. This is how Trinitie's journey begins..."

The I Feel the Love Project was contacted by one of Trinitie's church friends and asked if we could do a card drive for her.  Of course we said yes and we collected cards for Trinitie and prayed that she would feel better and recover from her tumor.

There has been lots of good news recently on Trinitie's FaceBook page, Get Well Trin.  In May, Trinitie completed her 2nd round of chemotherapy transfusion.  On June 4th, Trinitie was able to leave home and attend Camp Smile a Mile!  Camp is 2.5 hours away from home!  How cool is that? What a great experience.  Her mom wrote that Trinitie was so excited that she was packed a week ahead of time.  And on June 17th it said that Trinite can ride her motorized scooter again.  How exciting!!  I am so happy for you Trinitie:)  You are an amazing young lady.

Join me tomorrow as we look back at the recipient of the I Feel the Love Project cards for the month of April 2012, Emily.

I Feel the Love Project- U.S. Navy Sailors

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #8

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the month of February 2012.

U.S. Navy Sailors

In February we made cards for sailors of the U.S. Navy who were about to deploy overseas for a tour of duty. We wanted to send them some love and support before they departed on their next mission.

We felt this would be a great opportunity to say thank you to those who are working hard to keep our country safe. Our goal was to send 100 cards.  Well, we surpassed our goal and we were actually able to send a combined total of 144 cards and sets of prayer beads to 144 members of the USS Georgia Blue Crew departing to the Indian Ocean and Diego Garcia.  Each member of the crew received either a card or a set of prayer beads.

I want to thank Court of Courts Craft Corner and her classmates for sending in the prayer beads.  They were a big hit. The sailors from this crew have not yet returned from this tour of duty.  I will keep you posted and as soon as I have more information that I am allowed to post, I will provide an update.  I am sure they are looking forward to coming home.

Join me tomorrow as we look back at the recipient of the I Feel the Love Project cards for the month of March 2012, Trinitie.

Have a wonderful day.

I Feel the Love Project- Olivia Cappelluti- In Loving Memory

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #7

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the month of January 2012.

Olivia's grandmother told us, "Olivia Cappelluti was born on Aug. 2, 2011 to parents, Jon and Loreto Lara Cappelluti. She was a twin, weighing only 2.2 lbs at birth, and, as a result of unusual developmental patterns, had both heart and lung defects. Her life expectancy was two weeks. Defying the odds, Olivia not only lived, she thrived, remaining in the hospital, gaining weight and preparing herself for open-heart surgery. Two months later, the first surgery was performed and afterwards, this spunky 2-month old was able to be disconnected from all life-support tubes and took nourishment for the first time by mouth!

On Monday, Dec. 19th, at 4 ½ months old, Olivia was taken in for her second open-heart surgery, this one more complicated and risky than the first one. She was on the operating table for nine hours while surgeons worked diligently to correct her heart defects. This amazing little fighter survived this ordeal, but her battle wasn’t over. During the next 24 hours, a blockage developed. The doctors realized her only hope was yet another surgery. Wednesday morning, while in the operating room, God called her home…her work here was done. Heaven had a new little angel that day….we miss her."

As a result of this touching story, we were honored to make cards for Olivia's family.  This was the first time that our cards left the United States as this family resides in Chile, South America.  Although Jon is originally from California, Loreto is not and English is not her native language.

In a recent email exchange with Olivia's grandma, here is what I learned about how this family felt about receiving the cards:

"The Cappelluti family was overwhelmed by the expressions of sympathy and concern they received from the I Feel the Love Project. The fact that each card was unique and made especially for Olivia and the family was an amazing gift. Thank you is really an inadequate word but sadly all we have.. "Tu eres la luz de Dios" From South America: You are the light of God."

If you were a part of the I Feel the Love Project for the month of January, I know that your card was a blessing to this family.  What is really amazing is that there were a number of cards that month that had butterflies on them and the nickname that Jon and Loreto had given Olivia meant butterfly in Spanish.  I know that was really special to them.   Thank you so much for continuing to support this project.  It means so much to those who receive our cards.

Join me tomorrow as we look back at the recipient of the I Feel the Love Project cards for the month of February 2012, The U.S. Navy Sailors.

Have a wonderful day.

I Feel The Love Project- In Loving Memory: Korrine Croghan

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #6

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the months of November/December 2011.

In loving memory of Korrine Lannie Croghan
4/18/94 - 10/27/08

The Pediatric Oncology Unit at Kaiser
Hospital (Oakland, CA) was the recipient
of our handcrafted CHRISTMAS cards.

Korrine Croghan was a vivacious 14-year-old girl who lived all of her life in Livermore, CA. She had a love for animals, sports, and most of all, family. On December 20th, 2007, Korrine was diagnosed with Choriocarcinoma with a germ cell element. Choriocarcinoma is a very rare type of cancer in teenage girls and inflicts less than 200 nationwide each year. Although the cancer started in her left ovary, the cancer had spread to her right ovary, lungs and liver. After the removal of a cantaloupe sized tumor in her left ovary on December 21st of 2007, Korrine, endured 10 months of intense chemotherapy designed for adult men.

In loving memory of Korrine, the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Kaiser, where Korrine received treatment, received nearly 100 cards from the IFTL Project for the children who spent their Christmas in the hospital.

Korrine had a dream to give back to others who also battled against this terrible disease and this dream lives on in a non-profit organization baring Korrine's initials, Team KCTeam KC became an official nonprofit by joining forces with Kaiser Foundation Hospital. All monies raised by Team KC directly benefit pediatric cancer patients and their families and all monetary contributions are tax deductible.

Team KC states that their mission is, "To help improve the quality of life of pediatric cancer patients and their families. We wish to supply children with fun activities, toys and anything else that will brighten and better their lives. Monies will also be used to help parents pay for bills and defray the costs of gas, food and lodging that go along with caring for a child with cancer."

This just really makes me happy. Korrine's story inspires me to keep going and to do as much as I can for those in need of a little love.  I hope you will consider joining me in July when we resume our IFTL Project with a fabulous project for a deserving cause.

Join me Monday as we look back at the recipient of the I Feel the Love Project cards for the month of January 2012, Olivia Cappelluti.

I Feel the Love Project- Ethan Pinter

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Project #5

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the month of October 2011.

Ethan was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia at the age of 2 months old. Thanks to a liver transplant and the wonderful care he received from his doctors, Ethan celebrated his 2nd birthday in November of 2011. The IFTL Project helped in this fabulous celebration by sending Ethan birthday cards.

Since that time, Ethan has had some setbacks including a very lengthy stay in the hospital, which began in December 2011. There can be many complications following a liver transplant and unfortunately, Ethan has experienced his share. This has been difficult on his family as once again his mother, Melissa, was separated from the rest of the family while Ethan was being treated.

In February, Ethan began to get better, but he was not well enough to go home. Melissa wrote that Ethan was in rehab and that his schedule was crazy! It went something like this:  Occupational Therapy- 8:15-8:45; Speech Therapy- 10:15-10:45; and Physical Therapy- 11:15-11:45; 12:00- lunch and nap and then it starts all over at 2:15 till 4:15.

Recently, Ethan made a turn for the better and he is home! Praise God:) We are all very happy to hear this news Melissa and Chris and we pray that Ethan will continue on a healthy path.

I Feel the Love Project- Pediatric Specialty Care

I FEEL THE LOVE PROJECT

I Feel the Love Project
One Year Anniversary

Today we continue our journey back to the beginning by looking back at our recipient for the month of September 2011.

Pediatric Specialty Care (PSC) has been successfully serving medically fragile children and their families for nearly 20 years. Many of the children who reside at PSC were born severely prematurely -- NICU babies whose lungs never had the chance to develop in-utero. While miracles of medicine have enabled some of the tiniest babies to survive and thrive with no developmental delays or physical problems, some require a lifetime of assistance to breathe, using a ventilator.

"I Feel the Love Project" was asked to co-sponsor a Halloween blog hop in September by Ms. Ellen, Admissions Coordinator at PSC. Ms. Ellen is also a talented crafter and successfully runs her own blog, Card Monkey's Paper Jungle. The blog hop would feature banners that would be made and donated by the 40 or so bloggers who quickly responded and wanted to join in the fun.  Here is what Ms. Ellen had to say about the banners-

"Banners – all of them amazing! -- came from all over the world, including here in the U.S., as well as Canada, Germany, Ireland, France, and England. Some were highly embellished on cardstock, strung with ribbon; some were more simple but still colorful. Each one was a loving gesture from a kind and generous crafter.

When I brought the huge boxes stuffed with banners to PSC, our Programming (Child Life) staff took them out and laid them side-by-side in the facility’s living room. They FILLED the room! We staged an impromptu art show in the living room, where staff could choose which banner might be most appropriate for the children in their care.

The kids’ reactions were priceless – their eyes lit up with joy as these fun, friendly decorations were put up over their beds. 'Miss Ellen,' one called out. 'All of these banners were made by your friends? WOW, you sure have a lot of friends! Please let them know that they ROCK!'"

In addition, 50-60 individual Halloween cards were made for the kids and over 30 bookmarks were made by one special woman to give to the children.  They were really excited to receive these.  They got to enjoy them all month long and they really thought this was cool.

This was our first attempt to reach out to more than one person in a given month.  Thanks to the amazing followers of the IFTL Project, this month was a complete success.  In 2012 you will see more projects like this.

Join me next Monday as we look back at the  fourth recipient of the I Feel the Love Project cards, Ethan Pinter.

Have  wonderful day.
